Shipping Costs for a Container from China Surge 250% to $7,500 Amid Rising Demand and Port Congestion

Until March, the freight for a 40-foot container cost around $3,000, but now it has reached $7,500, representing a 250% increase in less than a year.

According to Rodrigo Giraldelli, a foreign trade expert between Brazil and China and import consultant, the growing demand for Chinese electric vehicles and the anticipation of imports due to tariff adjustments, along with port congestion, are some of the main factors driving the price surge.

“For the Brazilian importer, adaptation is key. The increase in costs and port overcrowding requires more strategic management, from product selection to negotiation with suppliers,” he says.

Estimates from the National Center for Transatlantic Navigation (Centronave) suggest that Brazil’s logistics bottleneck is responsible for an annual loss of over $21 billion in foreign trade, particularly due to unfulfilled exports. The calculation considers an additional capacity of 500,000 containers per year that is no longer available to Brazilian exporters and takes into account the current installed infrastructure.
