Maceió faces environmental concerns as company seeks sulfuric acid storage in port

The public debate in Maceió revolves around the potential arrival of yet another environmentally and socially concerning activity: the establishment of a sulfuric acid storage facility by Timac Agro Indústria e Comércio de Fertilizantes Ltda, a French multinational specializing in state-of-the-art fertilizers. The company aims to set up this storage space within the Port of Maceió.
On June 7, Timac Agro extended invitations to various stakeholders, including the Maceió City Hall, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, the State Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), representatives from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as associations, trade unions, universities, and non-governmental organizations. This public hearing aims to address the potential environmental impact associated with the proposed acid receiving and storage unit within the capital of Alagoas.
The hearing is scheduled for 10 am and will be held in the auditorium of the Port of Maceió.
Sulfuric acid, a highly toxic substance, is not only intended for storage within the port but also for transportation through the streets of Maceió to sugar and alcohol plants and Braskem.
Timac, a subsidiary of the Roullier Group based in France, secured the concession for the designated area within the Port of Maceió through an auction on the B3 stock exchange in December 2020, with a winning bid of BRL 50,000.
