How has Brazilian container shipping been performing within each trade lane in 2020? What is the impact of the global pandemic on Brazilian foreign trade? A survey carried out by Datamar shows that when looking at the cumulative total for Brazilian container shipping in the first five months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, the performance of exports has been varied, with it growing, remaining stable, or falling depending on the trade lane in question.  On the import side, on the other hand, most trade lanes saw a decrease in trade. The following is a detailed analysis by trade lane:

Mediterranean and Black Sea

Brazilian exports to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea remained practically stable, with a slight increase of 0.05%, reaching 96,738.32 TEU. On the import side, there was a 3.16% increase in volume, at 75,419.98 TEU during this period.

Far East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania

As for the Far East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, exports grew by a significant 14.01%, with shipments registering 291,974.57 TEU by volume. Imports from this region fell slightly by 0.69%, down to 421,487.34 TEU.

Northern Europe and the Baltic region

This trade lane experienced a modest drop in exports of 1.58%, to 143,732.47 TEU. Imports from this region grew 4.08%, to 196,286.79 TEU.

Southeast Africa, Middle East and Indian subcontinent

In this trade lane, there was a growth of 7.25% in exports to 27,267.33 TEU, whilst imports from this region fell 23.63%, to 3,462.50 TEU.

Western Africa

Exports to West Africa shot up by 14.97%, to 39,892.94 TEU. The fall in imports from this region was particularly pronounced at 40.54%, dropping to 563 TEU.

Caribbean, NCSA and USA / Gulf of Mexico

Here there was a slight drop in exports of 1.40%, with the volume registering 20,225 TEU. In this trade lane, the fall in imports was 27.48%, reaching 438 TEU.

South America West Coast
To the West Coast of South America, the fall in exports was 9.06%, with shipments at 54,179.78 TEU. In terms of imports, the fall was more modest at 1.56%, down to 16,127.00 TEU.

ECSA

There was also a 9.88% drop in exports to the ECSA region during this period, to 27,832.40 TEU. Imports from the ECSA region also fell by 12.30%, to a volume of 22,471 TEU.

WCNA / WCCA

Exports here rose by 6.54%, to 16,728 TEU. Imports rose by 7.23% in volume, to 5,750 TEU.

ECNA

This trade lane had an export volume of 115,887 during the period comparison, representing a 5.87% drop. Imports increased slightly by 0.81%, to 63,922.50 TEU.

Analysis carried out using DataLiner data until February (the last full month of data available in the system) still does not show this impact. If we compare the first two months of 2020 with the first two months of 2019 (by TEU) it is possible to notice that most trade lanes showed growth up to February, although the trend is expected to show another reality going forward.

Trade lanes

In the Mediterranean and Black Sea belt, imports grew 18% in the first two months of 2020 compared to 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 26,912 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 31,825 TEU). In exports, the growth was 0.15% (Jan and Feb 2019: 37,627 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 37,684 TEU).

In the Far East, Southeast Asia and Oceania trade lane, the growth in imports in the first two months of 2020 was 15% over the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 172,261 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 199,556 TEU). In exports, the increase was 18% (Jan and Feb 2019: 95,613 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 113,259 TEU).

In Northern Europe and the Baltic region, imports increased 11% in the first two months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 69,184 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 76,848 TEU). Exports had a fall of 9.17% in the same period (Jan and Feb 2019: 59,949 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 54,452 TEU).

In the Southeast Africa, the Middle East and Indian subcontinent trade lane imports dropped 11% in the first two months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 1,764 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 1,570 TEU). Exports grew by 0.5% (Jan and Feb 2019: 8,925 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 8,972 TEU).

In the West Africa commercial strip, in the first two months of 2020, imports grew 19% (Jan and Feb 2019: 296 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 353 TEU). Exports grew 9.7% (Jan and Feb 2019: 11,679 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 12,823 TEU).

In the first two months of 2020, in the Caribbean, NCSA and USA / Gulf of Mexico trade lane there was a 20.7% drop in imports (Jan and Feb 2019: 179 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 142 TEU and a decrease of 1.5 % in exports in relation to the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 7,444 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 7,327 TEU).

In the South America West Coast trade strip, imports fell 0.18% in the first two months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 5,884 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 7,055 TEU). Exports increased 9.88% in the same period (Jan and Feb 2019: 21,762 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 22,351 TEU).

In ECSA, imports grew 0.96% in the first two months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 9,985 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 10,081 TEU). Exports grew 9.97% in the same period (Jan and Feb 2019: 10,214 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 11,233 TEU).

In the WCNA / WCCA tradelane, imports fell 0.18% in the first two months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 2,141 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 2,137 TEU). Exports grew 9.88% (Jan and Feb 2019: 5,613 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 6,168 TEU).

Finally, in the ECNA range, Imports grew 19.6% in the first two months of 2020 compared to the same months of 2019 (Jan and Feb 2019: 21,360 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 25,562 TEU). Exports, in the same period, decreased by 6.09% (Jan and Feb 2019: 44,121 TEU and Jan and Feb 2020: 41,432 TEU).

Exports to the Mediterranean and Black Sea reached 235,342 TEU in 2019. In 2018, they stood at 232,143 TEU. On imports, in 2019 they stood at 187,786 TEU. In 2018, that figure had been 181,902 TEU

Meanwhile, exports to the Far East, Southeast Asia and Oceania reached 711,370 TEU in 2019 compared to 643,673 TEU in 2018, an increase of 11%. Imports stood at 1,114,160 TEU in 2019 up from 1,012,798 TEU in 2018, a 10% rise.

Exports to Northern Europe and the Baltic region on the other hand fell in 2019 to 364,106 TEU compared to 385,238 TEU in 2018. Imports from the region in 2019 reached 476,901 TEU a drop compared to the 488,415 TEU in 2018.

Exports to Southeast Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent reached 66.090 TEU in 2019, as against 76.927 TEU in 2018. Imports in 2019 were 6,625 TEU marginally higher than 6,533 TEU in 2018. [ wpdatachart id = 23]

Exports to West Africa in 2019 reached 96,744 TEU. In 2018, this figure had been 102,462 TEU. Imports in 2019 reached 1,914 TEU while in 2018 that value had been 2,174 TEU. [Wpdatachart id = 24]

In the meantime, exports to and imports from Far East, South East Asia & Oceania decreased 12.7% to 59,440 TEU and 15.2% to 111,109 TEU respectively in January – YoY.

Exports to Northern Europe and the Baltic region in January reached 37,517 TEU, down 7.7% YoY, while imports registered 44,168 TEU, down 13.3%.

Exports to South East Africa, the Middle East & the Indian Subcontinent fell by 9.2% to 27,862 TEU in January, in the same manner, imports were down by 7.9% to 12,760 TEU during the same period, year-on-year.

The export and import trade with West Africa registered a huge fall in January, down 34% and 19% to 6,062 TEU and 196 TEU respectively, YoY.

Tradelane activities in the Caribbean, NCSA & US/Mexico Gulf saw signs of improvements, with exports increasing 5.3% to 31,684 TEU and imports rising by 4.7% to 27,412 TEU in January, compared to 2017.

Exports to West Coast South America increased only by 0.3% to 12,568 TEU in January 2019, while imports fell 13.1% to 3,671 TEU in the same period year-on-year.

Brazil’s trading with the ECSA countries was down in January 2019. Exports fell by 14.4% to 11,046 TEU and imports were down 17.5% to 9,740 TEU, YoY.

In the meantime, exports to and imports from Far East, South East Asia & Oceania increased 8.4% to 739,176 TEU and 6.9% to 1,316,100 TEU respectively between January and November period.

Trading activity with Northern Europe and the Baltic region also showed growth, with imports reaching 596,699 TEU by November 2018, up 8.9% YoY. 

Exports to South East Africa, the Middle East & the Indian Subcontinent fell by 8.4% to 345,667 TEU, whereas imports rose by 21.4% to 154,411 TEU during the same period, year-on-year.

Exports and import trade with West Africa fell 1.46% and 1.66% respectively in the first eleven months of 2018, YoY.

Tradelane activities in the Caribbean, NCSA & US/Mexico Gulf saw signs of improvements, with exports increasing 5.7% to 408,521 TEU and imports 4.9% to 289,831 TEU in the same period, compared to 2017.

Exports to West Coast South America increased by 6.2% to 167,234 TEU between January and November 2018, year-on-year.

Brazil did well in its trading with the ECSA countries in the first eleven months of 2018, with exports up 9.7% to 136,967 TEU and imports up 7.8% to 135,421 TEU, YoY.

The following are the export-import trends since 2012 in WCNA/WCCA, and lastly ECNA tradelanes:

1. Mediterranean and Black Sea exports reached 27,964 TEUs in August, up 4% YoY, whilst imports fell 3.6% to 22,818 TEUs, YoY.
2. Brazil’s exports to the Far East, South East Asia & Oceania grew 5.2% to 509,060 TEUs in first eight months of 2018 YoY, whereas, imports to the same tradelane jumped 16% to 972,528 TEUs for the same period comparison.
3. Between January and August, imports from North Europe and the Baltic region experienced 11.3% growth to 972,528 TEUs, year-on-year.
4. Exports to South and East Africa fell hard in the first eight months of 2018, down 11.6% to 60,383 TEUs, compared to 68,319 TEUs last year. Meanwhile, imports from the South and East Africa tradelane jumped up 36.9% YoY to 13,617 TEUs.
5. Brazil’s exports to the Caribbean, North Coast of South America and US/Mexico Gulf increased significantly by 16% to 43,941 TEU in August, year-on-year. Imports also rose to 28,693 TEUs in that month this year, up 8.1% year-on-year.
6. There was a 20.4% increase in exports to West Coast South America observed in August, year-on-year.

1. Mediterranean and Black sea exports reached 28,862 TEUs in September, up 10.3% YoY, while imports fell 6.7% to 21,765 TEUs, YoY.
2. Brazil’s exports to the Far East, South East Asia & Oceania grew 5.7% to 581,665 TEUs in first nine months of 2018 YoY, whereas, imports to the same tradeline jumped 11.1% to 1,088,442 TEUs for the same period comparison.
3. Between January and September, imports from North Europe and the Baltic region experienced 11.2% growth to 492,785 TEUs, year-on-year.
4. Exports to South and East Africa fell hard in the first nine months of 2018, down 11.9% to 68,317 TEUs, compared to 77,571 TEUs last year. Meanwhile, imports from the Africa West trade lane jumped up 36.3% YoY to 15,019 TEUs.
