Brazil’s Sugar Exports in April Hit Two-Year Low, Says Secex

Brazilian sugar exports in April totaled 1.56 million tonnes, a 17.7% year-on-year decrease, reaching the lowest monthly level in two years, according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex).

Shipments last month, the first month of the new 2025/26 crop season in the Center-South region, declined amid still low inventory levels despite the beginning of the new crushing cycle.

According to consultancy Safras & Mercado, sugar stocks in Brazil’s Center-South were about 70% lower in the first quarter than the historical average for the same period.

According to government data, Brazil exported 38.3 million tonnes of sugar in 2024, up from 31.3 million tonnes the previous year.

As reported by Secex, the total exported last month was the lowest since April 2023, when the country exported 972,000 tonnes.

The Secex figures are based on export certificates issued at the end of the month, while the private sector typically tracks actual shipments.

Coffee exports totaled 173,000 tonnes (equivalent to 2.88 million 60-kg bags), a 32% drop year-on-year. Record shipments in 2024 also impacted the commodity despite a crop that fell short of its full potential.

Soybean exports, on the other hand, increased by 4% compared to April last year, reaching 15.3 million tonnes. This was supported by the harvest of a record 170-million-tonne crop.

The volume exported was among the highest ever recorded, while data from the National Association of Cereal Exporters (Anec) showed year-on-year stability in soybean exports.

According to Anec, Brazil exported a record volume in March, at 15.7 million tonnes, matching the sector’s all-time high set in April 2021.
