The volume represents roughly <strong data-start=\"392\" data-end=\"431\">6.5% of Brazil\u2019s monthly production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"434\" data-end=\"746\">The fish farming sector has expanded in recent years, with tilapia among the fastest-growing animal proteins in the country. According to the association, production has grown at an average rate of more than <strong data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"678\">10% annually over the past decade<\/strong>, placing Brazil as the <strong data-start=\"702\" data-end=\"745\">world\u2019s fourth-largest tilapia producer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"883\">Peixe BR said the rise in imports reflects a price gap. Imported fillets have been sold in Brazil at <strong data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"882\">BRL 25 to BRL 29 per kilogram<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"1068\">\u201cThat is roughly the same price as fish arriving at processing plants in Brazil, creating a significant distortion in competition,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1044\">Francisco Medeiros<\/strong>, president of Peixe BR.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1291\">The association attributes part of the loss of competitiveness to factors such as <strong data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1207\">tax burden, labor costs and regulatory requirements<\/strong>, adding that in some cases imported products enter the country with tax advantages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1607\">On sanitary issues, the group said it has requested that Brazil\u2019s Ministry of Agriculture send a <strong data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1422\">technical mission to Vietnam<\/strong> to conduct an <strong data-start=\"1437\" data-end=\"1461\">Import Risk Analysis<\/strong>. According to the association, diseases not yet identified in Brazil \u2014 such as the <strong data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1574\">Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV)<\/strong> \u2014 have been recorded in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1746\">\u201cThere are diseases in Vietnam that are not present here and have high mortality rates. We urgently need this assessment,\u201d Medeiros said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1748\" data-end=\"1954\">The increase in imports comes during <strong data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1793\">Lent<\/strong>, when domestic demand for fish typically rises. Industry representatives said the inflow of foreign product could influence price formation in the local market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"2187\">\u201cExports help balance the domestic market.
